Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg's AfD state parliamentary group leader Bernd Gögel (65) and his vice Emil Sänze (71) want to take over the top candidacy for the state election as a tandem.

"We will apply together," said Gögel on Tuesday evening of the dpa in Stuttgart.

First the "Badische Zeitung" reported on the double candidacy.

The AfD base will decide in an online member survey on the top candidate for election on March 14th.

"We are only available as dual leadership," emphasized Gögel.

The parliamentary group leader is considered to be more moderate, and Sänze is assigned to the ethnic-national camp.

Gögel said the tandem was an offer to all members to prevent camp formation.

In the summer, in an interview with “Mannheimer Morgen” and “Heilbronner Voice”, Gögel stated that it would be better to do without a top candidate.

“Because the AfD has no safe constituencies, there is no guarantee that the top candidate will also be in the state parliament.

If the top candidate missed the move, that would be embarrassing, ”he said at the time.

Gögel comes from the Enz constituency, Sänze from the Rottweil constituency.

The AfD had 15.1 percent of the vote in the state elections in 2016, which means that the party was entitled to 23 seats in the state parliament.

After several withdrawals, the parliamentary group currently only has 15 members.

In recent surveys, the AfD is between 11 and 12 percent.
