Augsburg (dpa / lby) - An attempted car theft in the underground car park of an apartment building in Augsburg went completely wrong.

A 25-year-old broke into a parked car there, the police said on Tuesday.

The man unlocked the bonnet and trunk lid and loaded garbage from the neighboring parking space there for reasons unknown.

When a resident came into the underground car park on Monday evening, the 25-year-old asked him to help him start the car.

According to the information, the man knew the owner of the car and called him.

The car owner then came into the underground car park with a friend.

The perpetrator eventually ran away, but the car owner and his friend caught up with him and held him until the police arrived.

It turned out that an arrest warrant had been issued against the thief who was prevented from doing so for other reasons.

He is now in jail.
