San Francisco (dpa) - The office communication service Slack was paralyzed for hours on the first working day of the new year due to a malfunction.

Users had problems logging in and sending messages, among other things.

Connections to calendar apps and other applications did not work either.

The outage affected Slack users in the US, Europe, Japan, Brazil, and other countries.

On Tuesday, the service was again largely trouble-free.

The failure began on Monday afternoon European time - when the working day started in many places in the USA.

The causes of the disruption, which lasted around four hours, remained unclear on Tuesday.

However, experts expect the company to comment in detail on the breakdown at the start of the working year 2021.

In the past, Slack had reported its failures very transparently compared to other tech companies.

In May, the company published a detailed blog post about server scaling issues that had resulted in major service disruption.

The outage, which was resolved on the same day, had at least in part to do with the skyrocketing use of the Slack servers.

Since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, many employees have been working from home and are increasingly dependent on office communication services such as Slack.

The problems are also inconvenient for Slack, as the company is currently in sales talks.

The enterprise software giant Salesforce wants the acquisition announced in December to cost around 28 billion dollars.

Slack faces tough competition from Microsoft.

With Microsoft Teams, the software giant offers a powerful alternative to Slack, but also to video conferencing offers such as Zoom.
