Berlin (dpa) - Going to the cinema again and again, that is certainly one of the good resolutions for the new year for many people.

If life normalizes and cinemas reopen in the next few months, there are actually plenty of films to look forward to.

This includes, and is no longer new, the latest "James Bond" adventure, which is currently announced for April after being postponed several times.

But the year 2021 also promises many other cinema highlights.

An overview.

CATWEAZLE: A quirky magician from the 11th century ends up in the present through magic - this weird initial idea inspired our television audience as a series in the 1970s.

Maybe comedian Otto Waalkes was one of the fans back then.

In any case, the 72-year-old recently slipped into the magician's outfit and went on a journey through time in the lead role.

“Catweazle”, in which Katja Riemann and “The boy must go to the fresh air” star Julius Weckauf also play, is due to hit the cinemas in early March.

In addition to the film “Der Boandlkramer and Eternal Love” with Hape Kerkeling and Michael “Bully” Herbig (planned to start in February), it could be one of the first major German productions after the cinema relaunch.

NOMADLAND: Venice was the first international film festival to take place as planned after the start of the pandemic - in real life, on location, in cinemas.

In the end, women triumphed: the Golden Lion for best film went to “Nomadland” by director Chloé Zhao.

Oscar winner Frances McDormand plays a woman who packs her belongings in a car after the economic collapse and drives through the USA as a nomad.

The film could have a good chance at the Golden Globes and Oscars (only in April) and we will open in March.

TOM CRUISE IN A DOUBLE PACK: More than 30 years ago, Tom Cruise put on a fighter pilot's uniform and celebrated worldwide success with “Top Gun”.

Now this Maverick is returning, albeit as an instructor.

At his side are Hollywood veterans Val Kilmer and Ed Harris, but also new faces like Miles Teller (“Whiplash”).

“Top Gun: Maverick” (starting in July) is not the only spectacle with Tom Cruise.

The 58-year-old does not shy away from action and was also in front of the camera for “Mission Impossible 7”.

Filming in spring 2020 was interrupted due to the corona pandemic, but has since been continued.

It is now planned that Cruise will hit the big screens as agent Ethan Hunt in November 2021.

FIGHTING WOMEN: Scarlett Johansson and Alicia Vikander are among the female Hollywood stars who have already successfully proven themselves as heroines in action films - and who want to prove their clout as such in the new cinema year.

Johansson gets her first own film as a Marvel heroine as "Black Widow" (planned to start in May) from director Cate Shortland, while Alicia Vikander plays the intrepid fighter Lara Croft from the computer game "Tomb Raider" for the second time.

When “Tomb Raider 2” starts is still unclear.

WEST SIDE STORY: Steven Spielberg may be over 70 years old, but the three-time Oscar winner is not yet thinking of retiring.

Instead, the next thing he has planned is a musical classic and has made a new film: "West Side Story" tells the well-known love story that seems impossible because of rival gangs.

Young actor Ansel Elgort (“The Determination”) and the still unknown Rachel Zegler took on the leading roles as Tony and Maria.

Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the first “West Side Story” film from 1961, is also back in a supporting role.

The cinema release is planned for December.

MINIONS: Little yellow beings with a weakness for chaos and anarchy: The Minions were not actually the focus of «Despicable Me» 2010, but quickly won the hearts of small and large viewers and five years later they got their first animation film «Minions ».

Now follows with “Minions - In Search of the Mini-Boss” a sequel that looks back on the beginnings of Gru and his yellow companions.

A start is currently scheduled for July.

DUNE: “Sicario”, “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049”: Director Denis Villeneuve has already celebrated worldwide success with works like these.

Can he build on that with his next project?

The Canadian took up another science fiction story and is bringing “Dune” to cinemas at the end of the year.

As early as the mid-80s, David Lynch showed actor Kyle MacLachlan on the desert planet, now it is Timothée Chalamet ("Call Me by Your Name"), who in the top-class work alongside stars like Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem can be seen.
