Munich (dpa) - Germany's record international player Lothar Matthäus tips that world footballer Robert Lewandowski from FC Bayern Munich will surpass the almost 50-year-old 40-goal record of "Bomber" Gerd Müller in this Bundesliga season.

«Gerd Müller's record is shaking this season.

I am convinced that he will break the record, ”said the 59-year-old Matthäus as a Sky expert after Lewandowski's 18 and 19 goals in the 5-2 on Sunday against FSV Mainz 05.

The now 75-year-old Müller set his historical record in the 1971/72 season.

For the 32-year-old Lewandowski, 19 goals after 14 game days are a personal record.

Only the former Bayern attacker Müller was even more successful with 20 goals in the 1968/69 season after 14 match days.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick praised his top striker from Poland after the double against Mainz, who simply continues scoring goals after an outstanding 2020.

"He's not leaning back, he wants more," enthused Flick.

Regarding Müller's record, the 55-year-old was more cautious than Matthäus: "Robert has 19 goals, but also knows that it is a long way."

20 game days remain until the end of the season in May.
