  According to reports, Brian Urquhart was born in Dorset, England on February 28, 1919, and graduated from Westminster College and Oxford University.

He is a veteran of World War II and has participated in wars in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the United Kingdom.

After the end of World War II, he participated in the founding of the United Nations as a British diplomat. He joined the United Nations in 1945 and became an assistant to the first Secretary-General Lay.
