The singer and guitarist of Finnish metal band Children of Bodom, Alexi Laiho, has died at the age of 41, the group announced on Monday.

The musician, who suffered from health problems in recent years, "died at his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week," the group announced on social media.

The exact cause of death has not been revealed.

"We have lost a brother. The world has lost an extraordinary songwriter and one of the greatest guitarists of all time," his former acolytes also greeted in a message posted on Facebook.

Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen founded Children of Bodom in 1993. The group has grown into one of the best-selling Finnish musical groups of all time and one of the best known internationally.

He will have sold more than 250,000 records in the country, according to his website, before playing his farewell concert in December 2019.

Subsequently, with three former members of the group, Alexi Laiho will form Bodom After Midnight.

Like his talent, the musician was named in 2009 "Best metal guitarist" by the readers of Guitar World magazine, reported Monday the public channel Yle.
