In the Central African Republic, the electoral commission communicated on Monday January 4 the provisional results of the presidential election of December 27: Faustin-Archange Touadéra is reelected in the first round.

These results have yet to be officially validated by the Constitutional Court after possible appeals.

The presidential election, held at the same time as the legislative elections, took place under the threat of a new offensive by a rebel coalition in a country in civil war two-thirds controlled by armed groups.

Thousands of voters were thus unable to go to the polls outside Bangui, according to the opposition, which also denounced in advance "massive fraud", but also according to many foreign observers and experts.

"Mr. Touadéra having obtained the absolute majority with (...) 53.92% is declared elected", announced to the press Mathias Morouba, president of the National Election Authority (ANE).

Former Prime Minister Anicet Georges Dologuélé comes in second with 21.01% of the votes cast, ahead of 14 other opposition candidates.

"It's a joke, there have been many irregularities and frauds," Anicet Georges Dologuélé told AFP immediately after the ANE's announcement.
