Tobogganers, cross-country skiers and alpine skiers are also active in World Cups on the first Sunday of the year.

Oberstdorf went terrific, Garmisch properly and now comes Innsbruck.

German Four Hills Tournament dreams have often burst on the Schicksalsschanze on Bergisel.

This time Karl Geiger in second overall and Markus Eisenbichler in fifth are promising in the race.

In qualification they improved on Saturday after poor training.

The favorite is Halvor Egner Granerud, yellow bearer, who won the preliminary round confidently and is the overall leader.

The two Poles Kamil Stoch and Dawid Kubacki are in wait.

The Alpines start their World Cup year on the Bear Mountain near Zagreb.

In the slalom, Lena Dürr had recently shown increasing form and shortly before the turn of the year in Semmering she reached 13th place after a good first round.

Overall, a quartet is at the start for the German Ski Association.

US top star Mikaela Shiffrin wants her fifth success at the Snow Queen Trophy, the 25-year-old is about to make her 100th World Cup podium.

Other favorites are the Slovakian winner of last year Petra Vlhova and Katharina Liensberger from Austria.

On Wednesday it will be the turn of the slalom riders in Croatia.

Natalie Geisenberger is hoping for an anniversary victory on the 2021 World Cup track after her baby break.

After four second places since her comeback, the double Olympic champion from 2014 and 2018 finally wants to clinch her 50th World Cup victory on her doorstep at Königssee.

«Of course everyone is now waiting for my 50th win.

If it works out at Königssee, that would be great, ”said the 32-year-old.

At the last World Cup in the ice arena in February, there was a German double success by Anna Berreiter, who is also this time at the start, and Julia Taubitz, who thus secured victory in the overall World Cup.

Katharina Hennig's fifth place in the mass start was an encouragement for the German cross-country team, which has so far been chasing expectations this winter.

On Sunday the pursuits are on the program in Val Müstair, this time in the free technique.

Hennig is also well in the overall ranking and is currently eleventh.

The Tour de Ski has a total of eight stages on the program, with the final taking place on January 10th in Val di Fiemme.
