03 January 2021 British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has not ruled out stricter measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus variant in the country, which has recorded more than 50,000 new cases a day for five days.



"In the coming weeks we may be forced to take tougher measures," Johnson said, quoted by Sky News, while a debate has already begun on the possible introduction of an additional level of alert, the fifth, after the government has already introduced a level 4, in addition to the three previously decided. 



Johnson, has launched an appeal to parents asking them to send the children to school tomorrow, in those areas of the country where the government has foreseen the reopening of elementary school.   



The postponement of the reopening decided for London and in the South-East of England, the areas most affected by the new variant of the virus, is an "exceptional" measure, explained the premier.



"Schools are safe, it's very, very important to point that out," he says.

The risk to children is very, very low and, conversely, the benefits of continuing to attend them are enormous and the threat to the staff is minimal.
