Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Justice Minister Katy Hoffmeister (CDU) has described the celebrations for 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany as an important sign of living together in tolerance and respect.

"1700 years of Jewish life in Germany shape our country," said Hoffmeister on Sunday.

"The sad truth also includes the fact that Jews in Germany have repeatedly been victims of hatred and anti-Semitism over the centuries."

As Minister of Justice, Hoffmeister is also responsible for religious matters.

Together with the representative for Jewish life in MV and against anti-Semitism, Hansjörg Schmutzler, she wants to take part in an interreligious prayer on January 13th in the Nikolaikirche in Rostock.

It should be the prelude to the festival year # 2021JLID in the northeast.

"Already more than 40 advance registrations and registrations give an idea of a varied year," she said.

Even today, anti-Semitism can be felt in society, said the Justice Minister.

"The festival year is an opportunity to show that Jewish life has belonged to us for 1,700 years."

According to Schmutzler, the festival year is about “making the diversity of Jewish life yesterday, today and in the future visible throughout the country”.
