Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The CDU Hamburg has asked the red-green Senate to start planning the Köhlbrand crossing immediately.

"Time is running out!

If the plans by the red-green Senate are overslept, our city is threatened with a traffic blackout at the end of this decade, the Hamburg port economy would suffer massively and Hamburg's international competitiveness would be weakened, "said CDU boss Christoph Ploß on Sunday.

In order to be finished with a new building by 2030, the CDU wants to transfer planning and building rights to parliament based on the Danish model via a so-called law of measures.

"Hamburg's economic engine cannot afford any further delays, the red-green Senate must finally act," said CDU parliamentary group leader Dennis Thering.

In mid-February 2020, the federal government and the Hanseatic city agreed in principle on a new Köhlbrand crossing of a tributary of the Elbe.

Accordingly, the federal government will contribute to the estimated costs for a tunnel or a new bridge in the amount of 2.5 to 3.2 billion euros.

The Köhlbrand Bridge from 1974 is an important artery in the Port of Hamburg, but has to be replaced by 2030 for reasons of age and capacity.
