Torfhaus / Nordhausen (dpa) - The rush to excursion destinations in the Harz has led to chaotic traffic conditions.

Hikers and tobogganists headed for the parking spaces in the partly snow-covered places on Saturday morning.

"We have chaos to the power of three, everything collapses," said a spokesman for the Goslar police station at noon.

The Harz lies in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

In the afternoon, the police blocked federal highway 480 as an entrance to Winterberg.

Blocking federal highway 4 from Bad Harzburg towards Torfhaus was also considered.

There was also a crowd on the popular, approximately nine-kilometer-long Goetheweg from Torfhaus to Brocken.

There was also a lot going on in Braunlage: The license plates of the cars indicated visitors mostly from the region - many came from Hanover and the surrounding area - but Berliners and Hamburgers were also represented.

There are no restrictions for day tourists in Lower Saxony.

The T-bar lifts are closed due to the corona, but numerous families and groups set out on foot.

In the past few days, the cars had been jammed for kilometers in excursion destinations.

Because of overcrowding, the police still advise against trips to the wintry Harz.

"I think it will be the same on Sunday as it is today," feared the police spokesman.
