Brexit: Spain and the United Kingdom agree in extremis to eliminate the Gibraltar Gate
The main minister of Gibraltar,
Fabian Picardo,
has warned this Saturday that Spain will not have Spanish controls either at the port or at the Gibraltar airport despite the agreement reached for the Rock to remain in the Schengen area after Brexit.
"According to the New Year's Eve Agreement,
only Gibraltar decides who enters Gibraltar
and no Spanish agent will carry out controls of any kind at the airport or the port of Gibraltar, neither now nor in the next four years. This is our land," said Picardo through his Twitter account.
Picardo thus responds to the statements of the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Arancha González Laya,
who in an interview published this Saturday in the newspaper 'El País' maintains that
Spain will have the last word on who enters Gibraltar.
"In order to enter a Gibraltar integrated into the Schengen area, the responsibility for control is in Spanish hands. In the port and at the airport," Laya said.
When asked if this means that Spain will have the last word on whether or not someone enters Gibraltar, the minister replied "of course, because
the management of entry control to the Schengen area belongs to Spain
.
"
Last Thursday, December 31, Spain and the United Kingdom announced a principle of agreement by which
the Schengen rules will be applied and the Gate with Gibraltar will be abolished
once the negotiation of a future agreement between the Twenty-seven and London in relation to El Peñón. According to the agreement, Spain will be the "ultimate guarantor" of compliance with the application of the rules of the Schengen Agreement that could serve as the basis for a future treaty on Gibraltar.
