Hanover (dpa / lni) - Despite the tough lockdown, the number of people infected with corona has increased in nursing homes in Lower Saxony.

Nationwide, 187 facilities are currently affected, the Ministry of Health informed the German Press Agency as of December 29.

According to this, there were 1159 residents suffering from Covid-19 and 504 employees.

In Christmas week alone (December 23-29) 104 people died in 41 facilities.

From the beginning of April to the end of December, a total of 808 residents in 184 homes died.

“Our focus with Covid vaccinations in the next few weeks will continue to be on the mobile teams who will vaccinate in the old people's and nursing homes and as quickly as possible in the local hospitals.

This is where the particularly endangered groups of people live and work who have the greatest risk of getting seriously ill from Covid and, in the worst case, dying from the disease, ”said the head of the crisis team of the Lower Saxony state government, Heiger Scholz.

Facilities with an active infection process are usually not visited by vaccination teams - the risk of the virus spreading unnoticed as part of the vaccination campaign is too high.

«We urgently appeal to the employees in the old people's and nursing homes to make use of the possibility of vaccination.

You make an important contribution to the protection of the residents and also protect yourself from serious illness, ”emphasized Scholz.

Experience has shown that the new virus hits elderly people in need of care particularly hard.
