Rostock (dpa / mv) - The camping industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can look back on an exhausting, but ultimately successful year 2020.

Up to and including October, the State Statistical Office showed around 5.6 million overnight stays, an increase of almost ten percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The approximately 200 places in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania benefit primarily from the travel restrictions in many countries in southern Europe, said the spokesman for the regional association of the camping industry, Gerd Scharmberg.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was a good alternative for many of the individual travelers.

A very special effect occurred in the inland areas, especially in the Mecklenburg Lake District: Because the places on the Baltic Sea coast were often occupied due to the admission restrictions, many campers sought places where there were still reserves.

With almost 1.3 million overnight stays in the Lake District, an increase of around 22 percent was achieved.

"The camping industry did not have to suffer from Corona," summarized Scharmberg.

He was satisfied that the hygiene concepts had obviously taken hold.

He is not aware of any case in which a company had to close due to an infection.

After the end of the current lockdown, the places would slowly start operating again.

It should be assumed that there will be restricted travel conditions in Europe for a longer period of time.

The industry is ready to accept guests under safe conditions.

This includes that common rooms continue to be cleaned and disinfected at great expense.

"We have to be consistent here, otherwise we will spoil our own business," said Scharmberg.

At the same time, it has so far been observed that the guests take care of themselves and thus ensure their safety.
