Yesterday, the Algerian Military Court of Appeals in the Blida province acquitted prominent officials during the era of ousted Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in the case of conspiring against the authorities of the army and the state.

The court's decision included the acquittal of the brother of the ousted president and his special advisor, Saeed Bouteflika, and Lieutenant General Mohamed Median, known as General Tawfiq, the former director of the Security and Intelligence Service, Major General Othman Tartag, and the general secretary of the left-wing Workers Party, Louisa Hanoune, according to local media.

In September 2019, the military court ruled that Said Bouteflika, Tawfiq and Tartag were each sentenced to 15 years in prison, and three years in prison, of which nine months were valid for Hanoun.

After convicting them of two charges of conspiracy to undermine the authority of the army, and conspiracy against the authority of the state, and last February the Military Appeals Court upheld the ruling before the defendants submitted a new appeal, which the court accepted and ruled their innocence, yesterday.

Louisa Hanoune was acquitted and released on the same day, with her conviction for the crime of failing to report a felony and a three-year sentence, including nine months in prison, which is the period Hanoune spent in Blida civil prison since May 9, 2019.

The new formation of the judges of the Military Appeals Board at the level of the Blida court also decided to return the detainees to Major General Tartaq and Louiza Hanoune.

Yesterday's session came after the Supreme Court, on 28 November, accepted the cassation appeal presented by the defense of the defendants, and these developments came after the Supreme Military Court announced the acceptance of appeals against the judgment, in form and in the matter, with the revocation of the contested decision, and the referral of the case and the parties to the Council The military appeal in Blida, forming a new group of judges to rule on it according to the law.

The Supreme Court is considered a court of law only, and its acceptance of the cassation appeal means that there is an error in the application of the law and the illegality of the decision issued by the Military Appeals Board.
