Berlin (dpa / bb) - The fire in a supermarket in Berlin-Buckow triggered a large-scale operation by the Berlin fire brigade on New Year's Eve.
The approximately 800 square meter building went up completely in flames and collapsed, as a fire department spokesman said early in the morning.
Fireworks apparently stored in the rear area of the market exploded during the extinguishing work and flew through the area, so that the around 110 emergency services had to pay attention to their self-protection.
But nobody was injured.
In the early hours of the morning, around 16 people were still on site for extinguishing work on Marienfelder Chaussee, it said.
The fire brigade had largely brought the fire under control at the time.
According to the spokesman, the fire brigade was initially alerted about burning garbage containers in the loading zone.
When the emergency services arrived at the supermarket, the flames had already spread to the roof.
The interior burned quickly.
The firefighters could only extinguish the fire from the outside.
Among other things, they used several turntable ladders, it said on Twitter.
In addition, several pressurized gas containers from an attached shop were brought to safety.
