This year, the House of Representatives election will be held by autumn.

In April, two by-elections, the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors, are scheduled, and if there is no dissolution or general election of the House of Representatives by then, it will be the first national election after the inauguration of the Kan administration.

As the term of office of members of the House of Representatives is about to expire in October, the House of Representatives election will be held by autumn.

The House of Representatives election will be held in the year of expiration of the term of office since 2009, when the Democratic Party of Japan was born.

In April, by-elections for the House of Representatives Hokkaido 2 Ward and the House of Councilors Nagano Election District are scheduled due to the resignation of former Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Yoshikawa and the death of former Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Haneda of the Constitutional Democratic Party.

If there is no dissolution of the House of Representatives and a general election by then, it will be the first national election after the inauguration of the Kan administration, and the election results are expected to affect the political situation after that.

On the other hand, in the local elections, the Gifu prefectural governor's election, which is expected to be a conservative division, and the Yamagata prefectural governor's election, which is expected to be the first election campaign in 12 years, will be held later this month, and the term has expired in nine prefectures such as Chiba and Akita. It is expected that a governor's election will be held accordingly.

In addition, mayoral elections are scheduled for 15 prefectural capitals such as Nagoya and Sendai, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election will be held in the summer.

With the spread of the new coronavirus uncertain, there is likely to be a debate over infection control and how to rebuild the economy in each election.
