Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - At the start of the vaccinations against the corona virus, Saxony-Anhalt exceeded its own self-imposed milestone.

By Thursday morning, around 10 100 doses of the vaccine had been administered, according to an overview by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The first of the two necessary syringes were given in roughly equal proportions to residents of nursing homes and medical and nursing staff.

Saxony-Anhalt had decided to use up the first delivery by the turn of the year.

This corresponds to 9750 vaccinations and was achieved.

On Wednesday, all 14 districts and urban districts received new vaccines and other accessories such as needles, swabs and syringes.

This ensures that around 10,000 more people can initially receive the first dose of the corona vaccination.

After a second vaccination after three weeks, the full protective effect should be achieved.

Saxony-Anhalt is currently storing half of the vaccine delivered so that all first-vaccinated people can be supplied again even in the event of unplanned delivery failures.

This means that around 20,000 vaccine doses that have already arrived are initially put into the supply.

Since the start on the last weekend in December, Saxony-Anhalt has made good progress with vaccination compared to other federal states.

In Thuringia, which has roughly the same number of inhabitants, 810 men and women have been vaccinated so far, according to the RKI - Saxony-Anhalt cared for twelve times as many in the same time.

The neighboring states of Saxony (2653 vaccinations), Lower Saxony (2705) and Brandenburg (3036), which are more populous, have also reported significantly fewer corona vaccinations.
