Due to the pandemic, all the country's cathedrals have a special bell ringing on New Year's Eve.

The bells ring for ten minutes starting at 18.00.

This is to remember and honor those who died during this pandemic year.

- The bell ringing is extra important this year as many have left us and funerals have not happened as usual due to the restrictions, says Antje Jackelén, Archbishop of the Church of Sweden.

The pandemic has claimed over 8,000 lives in Sweden.

More than 350 people in Uppsala have died as a result of the virus.

It is the first time in modern times that the church bells ring at the same time to draw attention to something that has affected the whole country.

"Stop and look ahead"

In Uppsala, "Storan" will call.

It is Uppsala's - and Sweden's largest church bell with a diameter of over 2.20 meters and a weight of 7 tons.

- I hope that this bell ringing will be a moment when we can stop and gather around memories but also to look ahead, says Archbishop Antje Jackelén.
