Schwerin (dpa) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) believes that loosening of the currently strict corona protective measures is only possible and responsible after a significant reduction in the number of infections.

"We can only make greater relaxation when we have incidence values well below 50 again over a longer period of time," said Schwesig of the German Press Agency in Schwerin.

According to experts, significantly fewer than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days are a prerequisite for tracing the path of infection and being able to reduce infections.

Before the Prime Minister's Conference with Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) planned for January 5, Schwesig made it clear that protecting the health and the situation of children was central to her.

"Schools and daycare centers have priority," emphasized Schwesig.

For tourism and gastronomy, the Schwerin head of government sees little opportunity for a quick lifting of the restrictions applicable to these areas.

“With the start of vaccinations, the way opens up to get out of the pandemic step by step.

But there is still a long way to go, and avoiding contact is still essential in order to be able to contain the infection, ”explained Schwesig.
