Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The Hamburg school authority has confirmed the home schooling in the Hanseatic city, which was initially extended by one week in the new year.

The background for this decision is the persistently high number of new corona infections, said a spokeswoman on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Senate extended the mandatory attendance, which had already been suspended from January 5 to 10, by one week and also did not rule out the fact that there would be no regular face-to-face classes in the last two weeks of January.

The parents' initiative “Families in Crisis” had sharply criticized this.

The initiative, active in several federal states, called for the schools to be fully opened in January.

Co-founder Anna-Maria Kuricová said she couldn't understand why Hamburg had already decided to extend distance learning before a lockdown extension was decided.

The current decision undermines the right of children to education and throws equal opportunities overboard.

Children whose parents cannot support home schooling at home would again be left behind.

The “Families in Crisis” initiative was founded in March 2020 by parents in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia to claim the rights of families and children in the Corona crisis.

According to spokeswoman Heike Riedmann, around 100 people are currently actively involved in the initiative and 300 on individual topics.

The main concern, she says, is to focus on the needs of families and children.
