The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, gave his instructions to the prefects for New Year's Eve.

Around 100,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized on the ground for operations revolving around two priorities: fighting against prohibited gatherings and against urban violence.

The New Year's Eve festivities promise to be special this year, due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Gatherings and parties prohibited, curfews: the authorities want to enforce the measures in force, while fighting against urban violence.

Before knowing in detail the device that will be put in place, the Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin transmitted his instructions in a telegram addressed to all the prefects of France.

They revolve around two priorities: the fight against prohibited gatherings and against urban violence.

100,000 police and gendarmes mobilized

First, in the midst of a health crisis, Gerald Darmanin wants the police to intervene as soon as a clandestine party is reported with fines for the participants and proceedings against the organizers.

As for the urban violence that tarnishes New Year's Eve each year, the Minister of the Interior recalls that the curfew will be in effect tomorrow from 8 p.m.

He therefore asks the prefects to set up "visible" patrols and controls in the city center and in sensitive areas, to assert "the authority of the State at every point in the territory", he writes.

Around 100,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized.

Gérald Darmanin urges the prefects to ban the sale of gasoline in jerry cans and alcohol to take away.

The Minister encourages the launch, under the authority of the prosecutors, of operations of identity checks, searches of vehicles, controls of resellers of fireworks but also of securing of construction sites.

The objective: to limit access to anything that could be used against the police.
