Cottbus (dpa / bb) - The spokeswoman for the Lausitz Round, Christine Herntier, has appealed to politicians to involve the affected municipalities more in the structural change process.

The municipalities are already working at full speed on the projects that are intended to enable a successful structural change.

You know exactly what is needed, said the 63-year-old of the German press agency.

Herntier (independent) has been the mayor of Spremberg (Spree-Neisse district) since 2014.

As the spokesperson for the Lausitz Round, she was involved in the coal commission for the municipalities concerned - and thus also involved in the decisions.

The Lausitzrunde is a communal alliance of Lausitz mayors and community representatives.

The coal phase-out for more climate protection by 2038 at the latest is a done deal - new, sustainable jobs are to be created in the federal states and regions made more attractive.

The federal government wants to invest up to 40 billion euros in the lignite regions.

According to the state's funding guidelines, a total of 3.6 billion euros in federal funds will flow into the Brandenburg part of Lusatia over the next 18 years - according to the information, that is 230 million euros per year.

Brandenburg intends to coordinate closely with Saxony on future projects.

“The change can only succeed if the affected communities benefit from it.

Only if acceptance is achieved will people accept the great challenge, ”said Herntier.

"We don't want to be the losers of structural change, we want to be taken with us and have a say".
