Berlin (AP) - The cup game between Alba Berlin and the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig was canceled on Thursday shortly before the scheduled start of the game.

The Braunschweig residents had received a quarantine order from the Braunschweig health department late in the morning, as announced by the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL).

Because of this, the Lower Saxony had to break off their trip to Berlin and return.

The catch-up game should actually take place at 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve in the arena at Ostbahnhof.

The Berlin team was already in the hall to prepare when the unexpected cancellation occurred.

"We caught ourselves off guard," said an Alba employee of the German press agency.

With a success, the defending champion from the capital could have made it into the final four tournament perfectly.

An alternative date is not fixed yet.

As a precaution, Braunschweig's player went into domestic isolation on Tuesday after a player had a weakly positive result.

On Wednesday, however, the Braunschweig health department lifted the team's quarantine after the control tests for the corona virus had negative results for all players.

On Thursday, however, the health department decided to issue a quarantine order again.
