Turkey jails 92 defendants for the "attempted coup" for life

Yesterday, a court in Ankara sentenced 92 defendants, including prominent former military personnel, to life imprisonment, after being convicted of "attempting to violate the constitutional order", in a trial linked to the attempted coup in 2016.

Of the 92 life sentences, there were 12 hard life sentences.

Aggravated life sentences are the harshest sentences possible in Turkey since the abolition of the death penalty in 2002, as such sentences do not have an opportunity for parole.

Turkey accuses the cleric living in the United States, Fethullah Gulen, of planning the failed coup attempt that took place in 2016. Ankara also says that Gulen is leading an organization to infiltrate state and army agencies to turn against the Turkish government.

Ankara classifies the Gülen movement as a "terrorist organization," but Gülen, a former ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, denies the accusations.

There are still many trials going on in Turkey related to the coup attempt.
