Thalfang (dpa / lrs) - The difficult traffic situation in the Erbeskopf winter sports area has eased somewhat again.

Although visitors traveled to the Hunsrück in their cars on Wednesday, the chaotic conditions of the previous days had largely failed, according to the police.

The fact that the traffic has decreased is mainly due to the main entrance to the snow-covered area, which has now been cordoned off.

"That can change quickly in the coming days - around New Year's -" said a police spokesman.

Therefore, the police will continue to be present and control the traffic.

After thousands of visitors had come to the highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate on Sunday and Monday, the situation on the streets had worsened massively.

Numerous day trippers had parked their cars in violation of the traffic regulations after the regular parking spaces were no longer sufficient.

In some cases, visitors did not adhere to the corona rules, as the operations manager of the winter sports center, Klaus Hepp, announced.

In response to this, the main access to the winter sports area on the L164 was closed to car traffic on Tuesday morning.

Around 40 drivers are said to have tried to enter the area with their vehicles.

They were stopped by the officers and now have to pay a fine, it said.

Other drivers tried to evade other towns on Tuesday.

As an example, the police spokesman named the region around the former Idarkopf winter sports area, which is located in the area of the municipality of Stipshausen (Birkenfeld district).

The rush caused high traffic in the surrounding villages.
