A road inspector from Rijkswaterstaat was injured on Wednesday evening when his vehicle on the A2 near Zaltbommel was hit by a truck driver who ignored a red cross, the organization reports.
The road inspector secured a breakdown at that time.
The accident happened around 6.45 pm in the direction of Den Bosch.
The inspector and a salvage company present saw a truck approaching them in the closed lane.
To get themselves to safety, they jumped over the guardrail, injuring the inspector.
The road inspector's car and crash barrier were badly damaged.
According to Rijkswaterstaat, the handling of the accident, including the repair of the crash barrier, will take until at least 3 a.m. in the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
Traffic will be diverted until then.
"Ignoring red crosses is life-threatening. This has also been shown today. By ignoring red crosses you endanger the safety of emergency services and other road users. We always close lanes for a reason," Rijkswaterstaat warns in a response. .
Rijkswaterstaat started the #nietvoorniX campaign in 2018 to warn of the dangers of ignoring a red cross.
Last year more than three thousand fines were handed out.
