Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's municipalities have actively taken advantage of the offer of the Ministry of Transport and participated in the redesign of the state cycle network.

Between November 2nd and December 11th, more than 900 statements were received from 155 municipalities via an online participation process, said a ministry spokesman for the German Press Agency.

Almost two-thirds of the 247 municipalities called would have participated.

There are also tips and ideas from neighboring federal states, associations, the ADAC and the General German Bicycle Club.

Saxony-Anhalt wants to significantly expand the network of paths for more everyday cycling.

It should be more seamless, safer and easier to drive on.

For the final elaboration of the current draft of the “State Bicycle Traffic Network 2020”, the ministry is relying on the cooperation of the local stakeholders, for example in choosing the route.

Also because most of the infrastructure is in municipal hands.

The high number of responses shows the importance of planning such a cycle network for those involved.

The aim is to create a network of everyday cycle paths that will connect cities and their districts as well as villages - taking into account school and administrative locations and the national bus-train network, it said.

Planning started in December 2019 with an inventory.

In the first draft, according to the information, a cycle network with a total length of almost 4500 kilometers was created.

Now this concept will be revised taking into account the ideas, advice and statements.

The cabinet wants to decide in February 2021.
