Mainz (dpa) - Preferred candidate Bo Svensson will be the new coach of the Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05, according to media reports.

According to information from the newspapers of the VRM Group, the Rheinhessen are said to have already agreed on a change of the 41-year-old with Svensson's current employer FC Liefering from the second Austrian division.

The transfer fee for the Mainz ex-professional, who played a total of 109 competitive games between 2007 and 2014 for the penultimate in the table, who is threatened with relegation, should amount to 1.5 million euros and be transferred in several installments.

There was initially no confirmation from the association.

Svensson was assistant coach in Mainz in the 2014/15 season under Martin Schmidt, who was signed as the new sports director on December 28th.

The Dane then trained several junior teams at FSV, which he left for Austria in summer 2019.

It is still unclear whether Svensson will be sitting on the bench next Sunday for the record champions FC Bayern Munich.

After the Mainz coach Jan-Moritz Lichte had released after only three months in office at the beginning of the week, the team is currently being prepared by interim coach Jan Siewert for the season continuation at Bayern.

With only six points from 13 games, the Mainz team is in acute danger of relegation.
