Piding / Freilassing (dpa / lby) - Because they heard whining from a trailer, border police on Autobahn 8 near Piding took a closer look at a transporter - and found six small puppies.

However, it did not stop at an animal find on Sunday: As the federal police announced on Tuesday, the officers discovered another four and seven young dogs in two other vehicles near Freilassing and Piding (both districts of Berchtesgadener Land).

Most of the 17 animals were therefore less than three months old and too young to be transported or sold.

In addition, some of them were reportedly transported in too small and unsecured boxes and had to endure without water or food.

The necessary vaccinations and papers for the puppies were also missing.

The small dogs were all found in vehicles with Romanian registration.

The drivers were reported for violating the Animal Welfare Act.

The puppies were taken to an animal shelter.
