Dilapidated bridges, permanent construction sites, reduced lanes - drivers must expect plenty of traffic jams in the transit state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2021 as well.

Most of the sections are "old friends" on the routes of commuters and truck drivers.

They need good nerves especially in the Ruhr area, but also around the ailing Leverkusener Brücke.

The traffic center of the Landesbetrieb Straßen.NRW has calculated the construction sites with the highest risk of congestion at the neuralgic junctions (AS), motorway intersections (AK) and triangles (AD) for the German press agency in Düsseldorf.

Here are the top ten for 2021:

1. A1 AS VOLMARSTEIN - AK DORTMUND / UNNA

This route has been the bottleneck most prone to congestion in NRW for years - and according to the calculations it will remain so in the new year.

Among other things, the Volmarstein and Hengstey bridges are being rebuilt here.

The construction sites will have to be maintained until 2022.

2. A1 AK LEVERKUSEN-WEST - AS KÖLN-NIEHL

The construction work for the new construction of the Leverkusen bridge had to be reassigned, among other things because defective steel parts were delivered.

The contract for the construction of the first bridge is currently in progress.

Subsequently, the barrier system is to be dismantled, the ailing old Rhine bridge torn down and the second new Rhine bridge running parallel to the first new building erected at the same point.

3. A42 AS DUISBURG-BEECK - AS DUISBURG-NEUMÜHL

Several bridges are to be repaired on the A42.

At the same time, noise barriers are being renewed and the roadway is being renovated.

The work should be completed in mid-2023.

4. A43 AK RECKLINGHAUSEN - BOCHUM-RIEMKE

The A43 will be expanded to a total of six lanes.

The measure also includes the construction of more than 20 bridge structures and a new tunnel in the Herne AK until 2030.

5. A46 AS HAAN-OST - AS WUPPERTAL-OBERBARMEN

The construction of the Westring bridge between AS Haan-Ost and AS Wuppertal-Cronenberg is still ongoing.

The first part of the bridge has already been completed and traffic has been moved to the new part of the bridge.

Work is currently underway on the second part of the bridge, which is expected to run until mid-2021.

In the entire area of the A46 to Wuppertal-Oberbarmen, additional lanes and bridges will have to be renovated over the next few years.

The work is expected to continue until 2026.

6. A45 AS SCHWERTE-ERGSTE - AS LÜDENSCHEID-NORD

Several bridges are being built on the A45.

The work on the Lennetal bridge in the area between Schwerte-Ergste and AK Hagen is expected to last until mid-2021.

Between AS Hagen-Süd and AS Lüdenscheid-Nord, work on the replacement of the bridges Kattenohl and Brunsbecke will probably last until 2023.

7. A4 AK KÖLN-SÜD - AS KÖLN-POLL

Repair work is required on the Rodenkirchen Rhine bridge.

The start of the measures is planned for spring 2021 - they are expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

8. A40 AS DUISBURG-HÄFEN - DUISBURG-RHEINHAUSEN

The Neuenkamp Rhine Bridge is currently being rebuilt.

During the construction work there are mostly two lanes available in each direction.

After completion in 2026, the A40 between Duisburg-Homberg and Duisburg-Häfen will be expanded to four lanes in each direction.

9. A52 ESSEN-RÜTTENSCHEID - AD ESSEN-OST

The A52 between AS Essen-Rüttenscheid and AD Essen-Ost is being renovated.

Over a distance of eight kilometers, roadway renewals and refurbishment measures on 16 bridges are planned in both directions, as well as noise and other protective devices until the end of 2023. Two lanes will remain in each direction.

10. A46 AS DÜSSELDORF-BILK - AS NEUSS-UEDESHEIM

The most recent renovation work on the Fleher Bridge on the A46 will be completed by the end of 2020, so that traffic, including heavy goods vehicles requiring approval, can once again flow in two lanes in both directions.

However, a new building is required here.

The planning has already been initiated.

Around 85,000 vehicles pass the bridge every day, 12,000 of them trucks.

In future, they should again have six lanes available.
