29 December 2020 In the first three quarters of 2020 the presence of foreign tourists fell by 68.6%.

In 2019 there were 190 million.



The attendance of large art cities collapsed 73.2%.



The trips of Italians for work reasons have drastically decreased, less than 59% and those for holidays amounted to a minus 23%.

The European decline 


The year of the pandemic across Europe, tourist flows suffered a profound shock.

The provisional data of Italy for the first nine months of the year are in line with the European trend, 50.9% less than in 2019, which have flown away with 192 million admissions.

The hotel sector in the first 9 months of 2020 lost 46% of those recorded in 2019, while those of the non-hotel sector 54.4%.



Few Germans absent Americans


The presence of foreigners weighed on the tourism sector, starting with the Germans, followed by customers from Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Austria and France.

The presence of US citizens who were one of the top three nationalities of origin of foreign customers was practically nil.



Collapse of business trips and duration of holidays


To complete the picture of tourism expenses recorded in 2019 and evaluate the possible projections for 2020, it must be considered that for the total trips, including those carried out for work purposes, last year the residents who they stayed overnight in accommodation establishments in Italy and spent an average of 391 euros per trip and 85 euros per night.

A trip within national borders cost less than half of a trip abroad (833 euros on average), with a difference of 41 euros per day.

In Italy, the average holiday spending was highest in the summer quarter 2019 (€ 518 on average) and reached a low of € 273 in the first quarter.
