• Live: the last hour of the coronavirus in Spain

The Archbishop of

Seville

, Monsignor Juan José Asenjo, has signed a decree on the afternoon of this Monday about the processional departures during

Holy Week in 2021

by which, as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, he suspends the events and celebrations organized by parishes, brotherhoods and brotherhoods, associations of the faithful or other ecclesial groups that have an external character and, in general, all those in which use of the public highway is made.

"Taking into account the

organizational complexity

of the external manifestations of popular religiosity that takes place on the days of the Greater Week, as well as in Lent, we are forced to take

extraordinary measures

to help mitigate the expansion of the pandemic of the

Covid

", as explained in a statement published by the Archbishop's website.

The text highlights that "unfortunately" the persistence of high levels of incidence of the disease "as the forecasts announced for the distribution of vaccines, continue to discourage" for the next few months, "in the opinion of the different civil and health authorities consulted, the concentration of large groups of people ".

Seville will not have, therefore,

Spring Festivities

in 2021, since last December 17, the mayor, Juan Espadas, announced the suspension of the April Fair "since the necessary circumstances would not exist" that guarantee security citizens' health care for its celebration, taking into account that at that time only 30 percent of the population is expected to be immunized against

Covid-19

, "far" from the immunity necessary for the significant concentrations that occur in these parties in the city.
