China News Agency, Beijing, December 29th (Reporter Lu Mei) The seminar "Review and Prospect of Taiwan's Political Situation and Cross-Strait Relations in 2020" was held in Beijing on the 29th.

The scholars at the conference pointed out that cross-strait relations continue to be sluggish, and the risk factors across the Taiwan Strait cannot be eliminated in a short time, but the "time and situation" for resolving the Taiwan issue and completing reunification is entirely in the hands of the mainland.

Wang Yifu, chairman of the National Taiwan Studies Association, said that this year the situation on the island of Taiwan and cross-strait relations has become more complicated and severe, and the peace situation across the Taiwan Strait is facing severe challenges.

But no matter how the situation changes, the dominant power in the development of cross-strait relations is always in the hands of the mainland.

The mainland's policy towards National Taiwan University is clear and consistent.

Wang Sheng, executive vice chairman of the National Taiwan Studies Association, believes that the size, strength, and will of the two sides of the strait determine the inevitable reunification of the two sides.

In 2020, despite the impact of the new crown epidemic, the mainland's economic development is outstanding. The effectiveness of the fight against the epidemic is obvious to all. The fight against poverty has been successfully won. The "time and situation" to solve the Taiwan issue and complete reunification is completely in the hands of the mainland.

The "14th Five-Year" plan and the 2035 long-term goal clearly stated that it is necessary to "continue to promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the reunification of the motherland." The mainland has not changed the NTU's policy and still actively chooses peace, but does not rule out a passive choice war. It speaks for itself.

Zhou Zhihuai, director of the Academic Committee of the Center for Taiwan and East Asian Studies at Central China Normal University, pointed out that intermittent adjustments and easing of cross-strait relations may occur in 2021, but there is no window of opportunity for a foreseeable period of time.

The Taiwan authorities must promptly change the political operations of "anti-China" and "hostile to China", stop collaborating with the United States, remove artificial restrictions on cross-strait non-governmental exchanges, prevent cross-strait public opinion confrontation from continuing to strengthen, and avoid cross-strait relations.

Under the superimposed influence of multiple factors such as the spread of the new crown epidemic, the intensified strategic game between China and the United States, and the deterioration of cross-strait relations, cross-strait economic and trade has become an important bright spot in the development of cross-strait relations in 2020.

In this regard, Zhang Guanhua, deputy director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that the rapid growth of cross-strait trade and investment has directly driven Taiwan's economic performance.

The GDP growth rate of Taiwan in 2020 is forecast to exceed 2%, and the main reason is the rapid growth of exports to the mainland.

The mainland's institutional advantages, market advantages and the dividends of reform and opening up are the main driving forces driving the development of cross-strait economic and trade.

Looking ahead, the superposition of political and economic factors will still interfere and affect the development of cross-strait economic relations, but cross-strait economic and trade exchanges will also face new development opportunities.

The new "dual cycle" development pattern on the mainland will become a new driving force for promoting the transformation of cross-strait economic relations and deepening cross-strait integrated development.

At the meeting, experts and scholars also spoke and discussed related topics such as Taiwan's political situation, Sino-US relations, and cross-strait economic and trade exchanges. The seminar was hosted by the National Taiwan Research Association and more than 40 mainland experts and scholars attended the seminar. (Finish)
