Wolfsburg (dpa / lni) - Muslims and Jews in Lower Saxony have called for a quick reaction to the threats against the Wolfsburg imam Aissa Hajlaoui.

The police and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution should ensure that the threat of death is cleared up as quickly as possible, according to a joint statement from the regional associations of Muslims and Jewish communities in Lower Saxony on Tuesday.

Recep Bilgen and Michael Fürst, as respective representatives of Muslims and Jews, called for a reaction from all democratic institutions in the country.

In the face of death threats, one could not sit down and think that something like that would take care of itself, the statement said.

"We have to face this type of threat before death threats become murder," wrote Bilgen and Fürst.

The Wolfsburg police had confirmed a threatening letter and a corresponding report from the Islamic Cultural Center in Wolfsburg the day before.

The officers took the threatening letter very seriously and investigated in all directions, a police spokesman had said.

For reasons of tactical investigations, he initially did not want to comment on the exact content of the letter.
