Venezuela suffers from three pandemics at the same time:

the coronavirus, violence and police violence

, which is the most aggressive of all because in the country where everything is possible, government forces kill more than criminals and Covid-19.

This was confirmed yesterday by the prestigious Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV), which has estimated at 4,231 the violent deaths

caused by "resistance to authority"

, the official denomination that hides the extrajudicial executions led by the Special Forces of the Bolivarian National Police ( FAES), whom the UN

defines as the "extermination battalions" of Chavismo.

The Bolivarian government only recognizes just over a thousand deaths caused by Covid-19, although unofficial sources and the Parliament duplicate them.

"We want to highlight the epidemic of police violence, the increase of which has been sustained since 2016. In half of the federal entities in the country,

police fatality was higher than criminal fatality

,

" said

Roberto León Briceño, director of the OVV.

Precisely the FAES were born in 2016 by order of Nicolás Maduro.

Despite the prominence of the feared FAES, all the police forces and the military that are dedicated to security have participated in extrajudicial executions, "including a canine brigade," revealed Professor León Briceño.

"Deaths due to resistance to authority represent four times more than deaths from the coronavirus in 2020," Briceño confirmed.

Of the 11,891 violent deaths during the year of the pandemic,

4,153 were classified as homicides

, 3,507 deaths under investigation and 4,231 at the hands of government agents.

Among those killed or executed by the police,

66% had a criminal or police record, according to law enforcement

.

In total, since 2016 there are 27,856 Venezuelans killed by government forces, Briceño quantified.

The figure of 11,891 violent deaths, with a rate of 45.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, represents, on the contrary, an obvious setback in relation to 2019, when 16,515 (rate of 60.3) were registered due to the measures taken against the Covid-19, which has also meant

a great change in criminal modes

.

This reduction, which has also been observed in other countries in the region, does not prevent Venezuela from continuing to lead the regional ranking of violence thanks to executions.

Colombia, despite the increase in massacres,

will close 2020 with a rate of 23.3 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants

, which represents a significant decrease.

In Mexico, on the other hand, homicides increased to 30 per 100,000 inhabitants and in Brazil they reached 23.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Violence has been able to adapt to the new social circumstances in Venezuela, marked by the pandemic and massive emigration, with more than six million Venezuelans forced to march abroad to survive.

The other key factor is the destruction of the economy,

"which has changed the opportunities for crime and changed the landscape of violence

.

"

The police presence in the streets, the curfews and the confinement particularly punished the small gangs, which for years ruled Venezuela.

On the other hand, the large organized crime groups benefited, "they found new extortion niches"

with the food boxes subsidized by the Government

, import smuggling or harassment against premises, clinics and companies.

In this way, a new modus operandi for extortion was imposed, with the launching of grenades against those who did not pay.

The OVV has counted between three and four weekly explosions.

Like the economy, crime has also dollarized, abandoning the national currency.

"

The extortionists, kidnappers and home robbers charge in dollars

, but also the corrupt police and military at the country's tolls," certified Briceño, who did not hesitate to highlight the police lethality, "extermination", along with emigration, to when calculating the fewest number of criminals operating in the country.

"All of this also implies a surrender of national sovereignty, through pacts with the military in areas such as the Arco Minero and on the borders. These are mechanisms of cohabitation between armed groups and state forces,

which at the same time also implies a reduction in crimes by imposing its law,

"said Briceño.
