Hamburg (dpa) - The Naturschutzbund (Nabu) awarded the planned Hamburg port passage A26 East with the negative prize "Dinosaur of the year 2020" on Tuesday.

"The autobahn is a symbol of a failed transport policy as well as antiquated infrastructure planning throughout Germany," said the Nabu justification.

"We want the planning to be stopped," demanded Nabu President Jörg-Andreas Krüger.

For the expansion, fen soils are sealed and residual moor areas, which store a lot of carbon dioxide, are destroyed.

In addition, in view of the shutdown of the coal-fired power plant Moorburg and the lower handling expectations for the Port of Hamburg, the project is no longer up to date.

According to the economic authorities, the planned cross-connection between the A1 and the A7 should have a length of up to ten kilometers.

With the A26 East and the Köhlbrand crossing, a transport network is being created in the port, with the help of which, among other things, fewer vehicles should drive on the B73 through Harburg and Wilhelmsburg, as a spokesman explained.

According to the authorities, the project will cost around 900 million euros, most of which will be financed by federal funds.

However, according to its own estimates, Nabu assumes that the costs for the federal government and the Hanseatic city will be much higher.

In 2020, for the first time, it was not a person who was awarded the “Dinosaur of the Year” award, but a project, as Krüger emphasized.

Previous winners included the former Federal Finance Minister Theo Waigel (CSU) and RWE CEO Rolf Martin Schmitz.
