Paris (AP) - French soccer champions Paris Saint-Germain have officially confirmed the separation from coach Thomas Tuchel.

"Thomas has put a lot of energy and passion into his work, and we will of course remember the good moments we shared," said club boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi in a published statement.

The contract with the 47-year-old has been terminated, said PSG.

On Christmas Eve, several German and French media reported from Tuchel's departure in Paris.

The Argentine Mauricio Pochettino is being discussed as his successor, but there was initially no official confirmation.

The 48-year-old was once a professional for the Paris Club and most recently coached Tottenham Hotspur.

Tuchel had taken over the Parisian star ensemble around Neymar in summer 2018, his contract ran until summer 2021. The greatest international success was the entry into the final of the Champions League last season, PSG lost 1-0 to FC Bayern Munich in Lisbon .

In France, the former coach of FSV Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund was twice champion and last season also a cup winner.

PSG are currently third in the league, one point behind Olympique Lyon and OSC Lille.

In the Champions League, the finalist of the previous season made it into the round of 16 as group winners before RB Leipzig, where they will meet FC Barcelona.

The French world champion Kylian Mbappé had already thanked Tuchel on Christmas Eve and thus before the PSG announcement in an Instagram story.

«Unfortunately that is the law of football.

But nobody will forget your tenure here, ”wrote the 22-year-old striker.

"You have written a beautiful chapter in the club's history and I would like to thank you, Coach."
