Rostock (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 459 new corona infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus were reported on Tuesday - more than ever since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

For the first time, more than 400 new infections were reported in one day.

As a result, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days (seven-day incidence) rose significantly to 82.8, as the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lagus) in Rostock announced on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Lagus attributed the high number of infections to, among other things, increased testing after the Christmas holidays.

In addition, some test centers were closed over the holidays.

Nine other people died in connection with a corona infection - there are now 161 in total in the northeast. According to Lagus, the total number of confirmed corona infections is 11,634. 8664 are considered to have recovered.

The number of corona patients treated in clinics rose by 28 to 254 compared to the previous day. The number of corona patients in intensive care units rose by seven to 66 in the same period.

On Tuesday last week, the seven-day incidence was 96.3.

Scientists believe an incidence of less than 50 is necessary to be able to trace infection routes halfway and contain the pandemic.

Three districts have an incidence of over 100 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

The value is highest in the Mecklenburg Lake District with 167.4, followed by Vorpommern-Greifswald with 111.6.

Rostock continues to have by far the lowest incidence value with 27.7.
