Aachen (dpa) - The carol singing campaign was opened in Aachen Cathedral on Tuesday.

Aachen's Bishop Helmut This said that due to the coronavirus pandemic, only twelve children could not attend the service as originally planned, but only twelve.

The opening was broadcast on the Internet.

The carol singing, in which boys and girls dressed as kings collect donations, takes place under completely different conditions due to the corona contact restrictions.

The promotion has been extended by two weeks until February 2, 2021.

At the beginning of 2020, the carol singers collected more than 52 million euros.

"From door to door, that doesn't work now," said the carol singer-president Pastor Dirk Bingener.

Instead, there are plans to include living cribs in church services, video messages and the distribution of blessing letters.

According to the children's ministry “Die Sternsinger”, 300,000 children and 10,000 parishes participate in the Catholic custom.

The motto is: "Brighter than ever - the world needs good news".

The donations are intended for children in Ukraine.

Traditionally, carol singers go door to door to bring blessings.

You leave the blessing C + M + B on the front doors.

This stands for the Latin phrase "Christ mansionem benedicat" (Christ bless this house).
