A single school plane and a red school helicopter break the silence.

Two low-cost flights a week to London are the only passenger traffic.

Elin Lillebrunner is a pilot and has flown since she was 17. She has flown commercial planes, she often flies privately and she is also a flight instructor at the airport.

- The airport is an incredible asset in many different ways.

Both with infrastructure and as we saw here with the fire.

And it is a very good training center for aviation.

If we are to be able to develop aviation into something positive, we must continue to do so, she says.

Losses already in the 90s

Even when Västerås municipal councilor Staffan Jansson (S) started with politics in the 90s, the losses for the airport in Västerås were a big issue.

- In recent years, despite strong efforts to increase traffic, the deficit has increased.

And now there was a majority to simply close down this airport company, says Staffan Jansson.

- We have an hour to Arlanda with full accessibility to the whole world.

When we no longer have any direct flights from Västerås, you can not bear the cost that it means to have the local airport left, he says.

Referendum in March

An interest group for preserving the airport has collected signatures for a referendum on the airport's future.

The date of the referendum is in March.

If the airport is still closed, Elin Lillebrunner will be disappointed.

- Yes, then you have to apply to another airport, she says.
