December 28, 2020President Donald Trump has finally signed the Coronavirus Crisis Aid Act and an annual budget amendment that will avoid the suspension of many federal services.

The signing arrives just in time, before tonight when the 'shutdown' would begin.

After months of inactivity, Congress last week approved a $ 900 billion aid package and $ 1.4 trillion bill to fund the federal government until next September.

The stimulus package included direct payments of $ 600 to individuals and families, increased unemployment benefits, aid for small businesses and funding for the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The fate of that bill remained in limbo because for a week Trump threatened to blow up the deal - which his own administration negotiated and despite the fact that unemployment benefits for millions of Americans expired on Saturday - defining the stimulus package a shame and asking for direct payments to be increased from $ 600 to $ 2,000.

If the president vetoed the bill, the House and Senate - which passed the bill by overwhelming margins - could have reversed the veto.

"I understand that he wants to be remembered for supporting large subsidies, but the danger is that he will be remembered for the chaos, the misery he caused if he lets this expire," Republican Senator Pat Toomey told Fox News yesterday.
