Hanover (dpa / lni) - In the Corona year 2020, there is a slight decline in the birth rate in Lower Saxony.

By the end of September, 55,510 children were born between the Harz and the North Sea - slightly more boys than girls, according to preliminary figures from the State Office for Statistics in Hanover.

That is 240 children fewer than in the same period a year earlier.

Most of the births were again in the summer this time.

The month with the highest birth rates was August with 6,780 births.

In 2019, most children were born in July (6896).

Over the whole year, the number of births in the country was last stable since 2017 at a little more than 73,000. The first annual figures for 2020 are not expected until the beginning of the second quarter of 2021 at the earliest.

This year, expectant parents had to struggle with a number of corona-related restrictions in terms of accompanying the pregnancy or the presence of the partner during the birth.

There were strict rules for visiting the hospitals for the fathers and other accompanying persons.

In some cases, hospitals had even forbidden partners to come into the delivery room.
