Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony will receive an additional 65 million euros from the federal government for the expansion of the cycling infrastructure.

By the end of 2023, the Federal Ministry of Transport will provide 657 million euros to strengthen cycling, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Transport announced on Monday.

The aim of the special program is to build a safe, as complete as possible cycle network with fast connections.

The construction, renovation and expansion of cycle paths or the construction of bicycle parking spaces would be funded.

The funding is part of the 2030 climate protection program.

The municipalities are called upon to prepare projects for this special program, said the Lower Saxony Transport Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU).

Basically, he very much welcomes the funding.

However, the limitation of the program until the end of 2023 is a "great challenge".

"Therefore I appeal again to the federal government to find pragmatic solutions so that the funds will still be available after 2023," said Althusmann.
