Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Five young men are said to have sprayed several subway cars with extensive graffiti on Monday night in Hamburg - including a historic railcar.

The perpetrators had previously broken through the roof into the operations and maintenance hall of the Hamburger Hochbahn in the Barmbek district, as the police announced on Monday.

From the first crime scene, the suspects could initially have escaped undetected, it said.

A little later, civilian employees of the elevated railway station noticed a suspicious person in the track and parking area in Farmsen and a little later also observed two masked people spraying the wagons.

Two men who were probably on guard were able to arrest the police officers who had been summoned on the tracks.

Three other suspects initially fled in a car, which was found a little later.

The investigations revealed that the five may have been active at both crime scenes - the lettering and color matched.

After the personal details were recorded, the young men who were already known to the police because of other graffiti were able to leave.
