world

and 7,200 people who have lost their lives due to complications.

This was announced by Johns Hopkins University in its latest report, while the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic is about to reach 81 million.

In the past 24 hours, another 1,209 people have died, for a total of 333,125 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called an emergency meeting of the government body in charge of dealing with the coronavirus emergency.     

According to experts, the new variant of the virus, 501.V2, detected in South Africa is more contagious than previously known and has become dominant in many areas.

With South African hospitals reaching their maximum capacity, Ramaphosa is expected to announce a return to restrictive measures to contain the infections.
