December 28, 2020 The nations of the European Union have unanimously approved the post-Brexit trade agreement with the UK, a prerequisite for the agreement to take effect on New Year's Eve.

Germany, which holds the EU presidency, said the decision came during a meeting of ambassadors to consider the Christmas Eve deal.

"Green light", said the spokesman for the German presidency Sebastian Fischer, "The ambassadors have unanimously approved the provisional application of the EU-UK trade and cooperation agreement starting from January 1, 2021".

Approval was expected since the announcement of the agreement and all EU leaders welcomed it warmly.

The text still needs approval from EU lawmakers, which is expected to arrive in February.

The UK House of Commons is expected to approve it on Wednesday.

"For the spirit of unity and given the particular and unique circumstances, the conference of presidents of the EU Parliament accepts the provisional application of the agreement with the United Kingdom to mitigate inconvenience for citizens and businesses and prevent the chaos of a no-deal scenario ": MEPs affirm this in a statement.

The presidents of the political groups also decided to examine, together with the Council and the Commission, "a proposal to extend the period of temporary application, allowing parliamentary ratification during the March plenary".
