Ruhpolding (dpa) - Franziska Preuss and Simon Schempp only narrowly missed victory in the 28th edition of the Biathlon World Team Challenge.

The duo only had to admit defeat to Russians Yevgenia Pawlowa and Matwej Elisejew on Monday evening in the Ruhpolding Chiemgau Arena.

In the end, the Germans were 7.1 seconds short of their first joint victory in the invitation race.

Denise Herrmann and Benedikt Doll secured third place because Doll overtook the Italian Lukas Hofer by 0.1 seconds after the photo finish in the final sprint.

A total of 156,000 euros were distributed to the ten participating duos - 28,000 euros of which went to the winners.

Schempp (32) together with Vanessa Hinz ensured the last German victory at the WTC in 2016.

In 2018, he and his girlfriend Franziska Preuß (26) took second place.

For the first time since 2001, the invitation race, which otherwise attracts more than 40,000 spectators in the Schalke football arena, took place in Ruhpolding.

Without fans - because of the corona pandemic, which also made it necessary to reschedule the event.

But it should remain a one-time affair.

So Ruhpolding came to biathlon competitions, because due to Corona there will be no World Cup in January in the Chiemgau-Arena.

Instead, a double event will be held in Oberhof.
